The town of Certaldo is
of varied cultural and historical interest. It is well-known
mainly because it is the birth place of Giovanni Boccaccio
who also lived and died here on 12 December 1375.
The town is undoubtedly of Etruscan origin though
it started to develop in the early Middle Ages. Its
historical centre, located on the upper, hillier side
of town, is completely Medieval.
The Medieval part developed when the town was under
Germanic rule (1164) when Certaldo and the towns of
Pogni and Semifonte were passed on to the Counts Alberti
by Federico Barbarossa.
In 1292 Certaldo came under the direct rule of Florence
and in 1415 it become the seat of the Vicariate of
the Valdelsa and Valdipesa areas.
